Chlorine Gas to Sodium Hypochlorite Conversion

In order to improve safety, the City of Hallandale Beach wanted to convert the chlorine gas storage and feed system serving its 10 mgd lime softening and nanofiltration water treatment plants to a commercial-grade hypochlorite (NaOCl) liquid storage and feed system. Globaltech was selected as the design-build company to perform this conversion.

Globaltech was responsible for the permitting, design, installation, and commissioning of the new system.

The new bulk hypochlorite system included three 3,000-gallon storage tanks that receive 10-15% sodium hypochlorite and six metering pumps that feed sodium hypochlorite to five separate points of application.

An existing chlorine residual analyzer continuously monitors chlorine for process control.

Project Achievements / Benefits

  • The change from gas to liquid was made to improve safety in the workplace and surrounding community. The conversion also eliminated EPA’s Risk Management Plan requirements for the site.
  • Globaltech obtained permits for the project from the Broward County Health Department and the Hallandale Beach Building Department.
